The Catholic Defender: Small Town USA

IMG_1642This past week I have had the opportunity to visit with my Father who still lives in the small town of Humansville Missouri not too far from Springfield Missouri.

Humansville was once a small cattle town which today is still quite small.

There was not a lot of things to do in town, especially after 7:00 of an evening. There are mostly hard working farmers, many of whom have jobs in Springfield who travel back and forth everyday.

When I do visit the area it is always great to see those brave souls who have stayed setting up their residence there since graduating from the public school. There are but a handful who remains from my senior class of 1976. Most have moved on with their lives moving all over the Country.

IMG_1643Business threatens to dry up in all the small towns across America as they are being overshadowed by the progressive turbulent life in the big cities.

In other words, people are moving where the jobs are. Missouri is still considered a “red” state because the vast majority of people still live in these small towns USA.

The larger the city, such as Kansas City and St. Louis, the more progressive they become.

This is why I hate to see the small towns like Humansville dry up, which is still a place you can take your family to the “Polk Salad Annie” and get great service in food and hospitality.

Farmers will come in for a great breakfast just to see friends to talk about the news of the day. Yes, there is the chatter of the national news, the economy, politics, world events, but to these humble souls, what is happening in the local area means a great deal.

IMG_1641The passing away of a neighbor, a church social event, a public auction, things that touches their lives in a personal way become the big news of the day.

Across the street, the Barber Shop is open with the same Barber the past 47 years. He still recalls the story of a young man running seven miles a day after school just to play ball for the High School.

People who live in the small town USA cares about their Country, their freedoms, their rights, their faith.

100 years of progressive liberalism has done little to change their minds and attitudes of what is really important to them.

It is still my hope that these simple valiant souls will still win out at the end of the day so that even in the big cities across America, we can still have an important impact on society. To reduce gun violence at the same time defending the Second Amendment of the Constitution.

IMG_1640The right to worship God in freedom and not be suppressed by a Government seeking to impose it’s will among all Americans.

If you want to empty these seats in the small town USA and rally them to defend their freedoms, then try to take these freedoms away. They will muster and unite against tyranny regardless if it comes from the IRS, or anyone else.

President Ronald Reagan once said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’” When people surrender their national sovereignty, they give up their personal rights. Kind of like a young recruit who joins the Military, you now become a property of the Government.

President Reagan also once warned, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

IMG_1644It is easy to pass by small town USA driving down the interstate not realizing life outside the fast lane.

People traveling are concerned about making a living and are occupied with their personal business.

The last bastion of freedom just might come from the small towns across America.

Our Constitution gives us a chance to spark a revolution turning back to wholesomeness by the power of a vote.

Our American dream that gave birth to a Nation still exists and can be found in these small towns and the people living around them. It would be a huge mistake to count them out in the next Senatorial Election coming this November.

*Best of DTB #321* Who really won the debate between Deepertruthblog and Brenda Johnson?

[iframe align="left" style="margin:10px" width="500" height="315" src="//" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen][/iframe] It is beyond incredible that some are still claiming that Brenda Johnson won the debate on Sola Scriptura vs us on October 3rd, 2013. She did not merely lose the debate but she showed an astounding lack of grasp on her own position. That she is very confused about what her own side believes was tragically exposed in this debate. This roughly 7 1/2 minute video shows some of the highlights from this debate. In it, she blatantly contradicts her own position almost too many times to count. We are not posting this to make fun of Brenda but to demonstrate-once and for all- that Sola Scriptura is simply unworkable. This video stands as irrefutable proof that we won this debate and that we will always win if Sola Scriptura is the topic. This doctrine cannot be defended. Period.

The weakening of faith in the real presence of the Risen Christ in the Eucharist is one of the most significant aspects of the current spiritual crisis.

Jesus wants to strengthen our faith in His Eucharistic presence.

That is why from time to time in the history of the Catholic Church He gives us signs–Eucharistic miracles that clearly underscore the fact that He, the Risen Lord Himself in the mystery of His Divinity and glorified humanity, is truly present in the Eucharist.

The most recent Eucharistic miracle recognized by the Church authorities occurred in 1996 in the capital of Argentina–Buenos Aires.

A consecrated Host becomes flesh and blood

At seven o’clock in the evening on August 18, 1996, Fr. Alejandro Pezet was saying Holy Mass at a Catholic church in the commercial center of Buenos Aires. As he was finishing distributing Holy Communion, a woman came up to tell him that she had found a discarded host on a candleholder at the back of the church. On going to the spot indicated, Fr. Alejandro saw the defiled Host. Since he was unable to consume it, he placed it in a container of water and put it away in the tabernacle of the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.

untitledOn Monday, August 26, upon opening the tabernacle, he saw to his amazement that the Host had turned into a bloody substance. He informed Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, who gave instructions that the Host be professionally photographed. The photos were taken on September 6. They clearly show that the Host, which had become a fragment of bloodied flesh, had grown significantly in size. For several years the Host remained in the tabernacle, the whole affair being kept a strict secret. Since the Host suffered no visible decomposition, Cardinal Bergoglio decided to have it scientifically analyzed.

On October 5, 1999, in the presence of the Cardinal’s representatives, Dr. Castanon took a sample of the bloody fragment and sent it to New York for analysis. Since he did not wish to prejudice the study, he purposely did not inform the team of scientists of its provenance. One of these scientists was Dr. Frederic Zugiba, the well-known cardiologist and forensic pathologist. He determined that the analyzed substance was real flesh and blood containing human DNA. Zugiba testified that, “the analyzed material is a fragment of the heart muscle found in the wall of the left ventricle close to the valves. This muscle is responsible for the contraction of the heart. It should be borne in mind that the left cardiac ventricle pumps blood to all parts of the body. The heart muscle is in an inflammatory condition and contains a large number of white blood cells. This indicates that the heart was alive at the time the sample was taken. It is my contention that the heart was alive, since white blood cells die outside a living organism. They require a living organism to sustain them. Thus, their presence indicates that the heart was alive when the sample was taken. What is more, these white blood cells had penetrated the tissue, which further indicates that the heart had been under severe stress, as if the owner had been beaten severely about the chest.”

untitled 1Two Australians, journalist Mike Willesee and lawyer Ron Tesoriero, witnessed these tests. Knowing where sample had come from, they were dumbfounded by Dr. Zugiba’s testimony. Mike Willesee asked the scientist how long the white blood cells would have remained alive if they had come from a piece of human tissue, which had been kept in water. They would have ceased to exist in a matter of minutes, Dr. Zugiba replied. The journalist then told the doctor that the source of the sample had first been kept in ordinary water for a month and then for another three years in a container of distilled water; only then had the sample been taken for analysis. Dr. Zugiba’s was at a loss to account for this fact. There was no way of explaining it scientifically, he stated. Only then did Mike Willesee inform Dr. Zugiba that the analyzed sample came from a consecrated Host (white, unleavened bread) that had mysteriously turned into bloody human flesh. Amazed by this information, Dr. Zugiba replied, “How and why a consecrated Host would change its character and become living human flesh and blood will remain an inexplicable mystery to science—a mystery totally beyond her competence.”

Only faith in the extraordinary action of a God provides the reasonable answer—faith in a God, who wants to make us aware that He is truly present in the mystery of the Eucharist.

milagro_eucaristico_tixtlaThe Eucharistic miracle in Buenos Aires is an extraordinary sign attested to by science. Through it Jesus desires to arouse in us a lively faith in His real presence in the Eucharist. He reminds us that His presence is real, and not symbolic. Only with the eyes of faith do we see Him under appearance of the consecrated bread and wine. We do not see Him with our bodily eyes, since He is present in His glorified humanity. In the Eucharist Jesus sees and loves us and desires to save us.

In collaboration with Ron Tesoriero, Mike Willesee, one of Australia’s best-known journalists (he converted to Catholicism after working on the documents of another Eucharistic miracle) wrote a book entitled Reason to Believe. In it they present documented facts of Eucharistic miracles and other signs calling people to faith in Christ who abides and teaches in the Catholic Church. They have also made a documentary film on the Eucharist—based largely on the scientific discoveries associated with the miraculous Host in Buenos Aires. Their aim was to give a clear presentation of the Catholic Church’s teaching on the subject of the Eucharist. They screened the film in numerous Australian cities. The showing at Adelaide drew a crowd of two thousand viewers. During the commentary and question period that followed a visibly moved man stood up announcing that he was blind. Having learned that this was an exceptional film, he had very much wanted to see it. Just before the screening, he prayed fervently to Jesus for the grace to see the film. At once his sight was restored to him, but only for the thirty-minute duration of the film. Upon its conclusion, he again lost the ability to see. He confirmed this by describing in minute detail certain scenes of the film. It was an incredible event that moved those present to the core of their being.

If Jesus causes the Host to become visible flesh and blood, a muscle that is responsible for the contraction of a human heart—a heart that suffers like that of someone who has been beaten severely about the chest, if He does such things, it is in order to arouse and quicken our faith in His real presence in the Eucharist. He thus enables us to see that Holy Mass is a re-presentation (i.e. a making present) of the entire drama of our salvation: Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection. Jesus says to his disciples, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe” (Jn 4: 48). There is no need to actively seek out wondrous signs. But if Jesus chooses to give them to us, then it behooves us to accept them with meekness and seek to understand what He desires to tell us by them. Thanks to these signs, many people have discovered faith in God—the One God in the Holy Trinity, who reveals His Son to us: Jesus Christ, who abides in the sacraments and teaches us through Holy Scripture and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

A mystery that surpasses our understanding

The Eucharist—the actual presence of the risen person of Jesus under the appearances of bread and wine—is one of the most important and most difficult truths revealed to us by Christ. Eucharistic miracles are merely visible confirmations of what He tells us about Himself; namely, that He really does give us His glorified body and blood as spiritual food and drink.

Passion_of_the_Christ_Last_SupperJesus established the Eucharist on the eve of His passion, death, and resurrection. During the Last Supper, He “took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, gave thanks,and gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins’” (Mat 26: 26-28). When Jesus took and gave the apostles the bread and wine, He said, “this is my body….this is my blood” by which He clearly meant that the bread and wine which He gave them to eat and drink really was His body and blood, and not some sort of symbol.

Earlier, in the famous Eucharistic sermon recorded by St. John the Evangelist, Jesus said to the Jews: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him” (Jn 6: 53-56). Shocked by Jesus’ words, the Jews said, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” (Jn 6: 52). Many of Jesus’ disciples were also scandalized. “This saying is hard,” they objected, “who can accept it?” Knowing that the truth of the Eucharist was a shock and a scandal to many of His listeners, Jesus responded not by retracting His words, but by raising the stakes: “Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life”” (Jn 6: 62-63). Here Jesus goes to the heart of the mystery by anticipating the glorification of His humanity through His death, resurrection, and ascension. He will give His flesh and blood as food and drink after the Ascension; that is, when His flesh and blood have been glorified and divinized, for, unglorified, “flesh” is indeed “of no avail.”

jes5Not all Jesus’ listeners accepted His teaching of the Eucharist. Thus He turned to them, saying, “‘But there are some of you who do not believe.’ Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him” (Jn 6: 65). Judas’ betrayal began with his rejection of Jesus’ teaching about His real presence in the Eucharist. In confirmation of this fact, Jesus said, “‘Did I not choose you twelve? Yet is not one of you a devil?’ He was referring to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot; it was he who would betray him, one of the Twelve” (Jn 6: 70-71).

The Eucharist is the Risen Jesus Himself in His glorified, and thus invisible, humanity. This is the essence of His teaching of the Eucharist (Jn 6: 62-63). By its death and resurrection, the humanity of Jesus takes on a divine nature; it assumes a new order of existence: “For in him dwells the whole fullness of the deity, bodily” (Col 2: 9). In His glorified humanity, the Risen Jesus, becoming omnipresent, gives of Himself in the gift of the Eucharist. He shares with us His resurrected life and love that we may even here on earth experience the reality of heaven and partake of the life of the Holy Trinity.

eucharistic-adoration1Confronting the mystery of the Eucharist, human reason feels its impotence and limitations. In his encyclical devoted this sacrament, John Paul II writes: “‘The consecration of the bread and wine effects the change of the whole substance of the bead into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord, and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. And the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called this change transubstantiation.’ Truly the Eucharist is a mysterium fidei, a mystery which surpasses our understanding and can only be received in faith, as is often brought out in the catechesis of the Church Fathers regarding this divine sacrament: ‘Do not see—Saint Cyril of Jerusalem exhorts—in the bread and wine merely natural elements, because the Lord has expressly said that they are his body and his blood: faith assures you of this, though your senses suggest otherwise’” (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, 15).

The Eucharist is Christ’s supreme gift and miracle, for in it He gives us Himself and engages us in His work of salvation. He enables us to participate in His victory over death, sin, and Satan, share in the divine nature, and partake of the life of the Holy Trinity. In the Eucharist we receive “the medicine of immortality, the antidote to death” (EE, 18). For this reason, Mother Church holds that every deliberate and freely willed absence from Holy Mass on Sunday is an irretrievable spiritual loss, a sign of loss of faith, and hence a serious sin. Let us also remember that if “a Christian’s conscience is burdened by serious sin, then the path of penance through the sacrament of Reconciliation becomes necessary for full participation in the Eucharistic Sacrifice” (EE, 37).

*Best of DTB #318* Hated by the whole world or loved by the whole world

Bishop (soon to be Saint) Fulton J Sheen was fond of pointing out that if he did not know what is the true church of Jesus Christ, he would seek to find it by determining which church did not get along with the world. This makes pretty logical sense when you consider our Savior’s own words;

And you shall be hated by all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved. (Matthew 10:22)

This single verse of scripture could be used as the opening and closing argument for the Catholic church has the sole ark of salvation created by Jesus Christ, through which He intends to save mankind. It is true that far too few churches, that call themselves Christian, adhere to the second admonition of this verse- that salvation requires a conscious, enduring act of perseverance on our part. However, it is truer still that only the Catholic church can even claim to be the church suggested in the first part.

To be hated by all those of the world, two things are needed;

  1. You must be known by all the world.
  2. You must be opposed by all of the world.

The first qualification narrows the number of qualified religions to those that are known in every part of the world. All of the non-denominationalists and neighborhood religions are necessarily eliminated. If someone in Bangladesh or Uzbekistan does not even know you exist, they certainly cannot hate you.

The second qualification is that all those who do know hate you. It is not enough, mind you, that the Jews hate you or the Muslims or the Atheists, or secularists or even various denominations and sub denominations of Christians. You must be opposed by all of these groups. The communists must hate you as virally as the fascists and anarchists. You must be hated by black, white, rebel, Yankee, straight or gay, rich or poor, butcher, baker and candlestick maker.

To give a practical example, what other church than the Catholic church could be universally reviled by;

  • Orthodox Jews
  • Messianic Jews
  • Fundamentalist Christians.
  • Universalist Christians.
  • Calvinists.
  • Trinitarians.
  • Those who reject the Trinity.
  • Dispensationalists, Zionists and Rapturists.
  • Those who reject such novel doctrines.
  • Muslims.
  • Atheists and Agnostics.
  • Pro- lifers.
  • Pro-abortionists.
  • Those supporting gay marriage.
  • Those opposing gay marriage.
  • Staunch conservatives
  • Staunch liberals.
  • Moderates.
  • New agers/Wiccans
  • Satanists
  • Hindus.
  • Mormons.
  • Jehovah’s witnesses.

The list could go on and on. Every political party or system, every religion, every denomination, sect and sub sect, at war with each other, are united in just one thing- hatred of the Catholic church.

This, of course, makes perfect sense.

“It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign the members of his household! (Matthew 10:25)

To give a practical example, we only need to go back to the past couple of years when we utterly humiliated George Lujack, Debra JM Smith, Vern Miroth and Dirk Yarborough in debates. Now, debates with each of these fanatics certainly got out of hand and I am as guilty of losing my cool as any of them so this is not an attempt to rehash this by any means. My behavior was shameful and I do not deny it and fell much regret over it.

However, what is quite striking is that the four of these persons joined together in openly lying about us (something I never did) and viciously attacking us when you could hardly describe their theological differences with each other as inconsequential.

Vern Miroth denies the Divinity of Christ and believes that only the Father is God. George Lujack rejects the personage of the Holy Spirit and follows a polytheist scheme in which the Father and Son are greater and lesser Gods. Debra JM Smith employs a cult-like adherence to strict Calvinism and Dispensationalist nonsense and other wild-eyed 20th century novelties and damns anyone not following her narrow myopia to hell.  Dirk Yarborough is of more of a Baptist bent that at least allows for the possibility that other Christians can be saved and that one’s conduct is a central component in whether one can be saved or not.

The reason I bring this up is because theologically they are universes apart in how the understand the Christian faith and how one is saved. It is hard to imagine how they could be united, yet they were. Each participated with the attacks of the others where they agreed and were wholly silent when they didn’t.

Yarborough and Smith, who had previously referred to Lujack as a moron and a cultist, were curiously silent when the latter viciously attacked the doctrine of the Trinity, a doctrine that both consider to be fundamental Christian doctrine (and rightly so). In fact, it was Yarborough that insisted we state that Lujack was a cultist prior to one of our debates. Lujack and Miroth, on the other hand, made no protestation against Smith’s contention that works- of even the moral law- have nothing to do with salvation. This is really interesting since they both claim that we are still under all aspects of the Old Testament law including the Liturgical and Civil law. This encompasses such practices as mandatory observation of a Saturday Sabbath and the Passover as well as abstention from shellfish.

Lujack and Miroth reject an eternal hell, Yarborough and Smith do not. Yarborough and Smith believe in both the personage and divinity of the Holy Spirit, the other two reject this explicitly. In terms of stated believe at least, Yarborough at least accepts Catholics as Christians, the other 3 do not.

The point that I am making here is that the each have just as many fundamental differences with each other (if not more) than they do with Catholics yet you do not see them attacking each other, do you? Lujack and Smith are light years apart theologically yet, online, they attack Catholics almost exclusively.

The reason is very simple. It is the same reason that radical homosexuals, satanists, feminists, muslims, atheists, humanists and all others attack Catholics first and most often. They are united in one thing- the unwillingness to subject their intellect and will to absolute truth. Each of these groups suffer from the same sin of Adam and Eve in the garden and Satan in heaven- the insistence that they hold the power to decide, for themselves, which is right and wrong in their own eyes. Though they wind up in radically different places, they all eat of the bitter fruit that comes from the same rotten tree.

Unity is one of the 4 marks of the one true church and division is Satan’s strategy to conquer it. Divide and conquer- the first and most basic tenet of war. The division is not the end, but the means to the end. Eventually, all will be united- for Christ or against Him. All on one side will believe and follow Christ with unity and without question and all on the other side will follow Antichrist with the same unity and passion.

How then will this happen? How can Antichrist unite all of these factions? The same way you have witnessed above- by hatred and pride. He will do so by appealing to people’s arrogance, selfishness and innate desire to dominate and rule. Jesus will unite by a person’s desire to love, honor and obey. It is no accident that marriage is a model of Christ’s true bride- the Catholic church.

“How can the soul walk aright and not stray, except by following the straight road of the law of Almighty God and of the Church?” St. John of the Cross

St. Paul wrote the the Corinthians, “The cup of blessing (the Third cup during in the Passover) which we bless (the center of Mass), is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?” The answer is an obvious yes. Acts 2:42 states, “And they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”

Paul 3The “Breaking of Bread” is the oldest reference to the Eucharist and the Mass.

Devotion to the Eucharist would become central in Christian devotion as Christianity would spread underground.

During the terrible Christian persecutions by the Romans, priests and lay people that were commissioned by the Church safeguarded the Eucharist at home for the purpose to give to the sick and those in home shelters.

With the Edict of Milan, and freedom effectively ending the persecutions, the Eucharist would be maintained in the Church within the Tabernacle near the Altar.

By the Middle Ages, this devotion of home devotion still had a place in custom but began to be centralized according to Canon Law. Eucharistic devotion would be open for the faithful in the Church.

becketSt. Thomas a Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury (1118-1170) wrote a friend, “If you do not harken to me who have been want to pray for you in an abundance of tears and with groanings not a few before the Majestic of the body of Christ.” (Materials V 276)

St. Thomas would be a Martyr for the Eucharist as he was murdered by four English Knights.

The Altar at the Canterbury Cathedral was converted into a shrine.

It was once popular for people to have a shine with the Eucharist at homes, but with the “Revised Code of Canon Law” 937, states, “Unless there is a grave reason to the contrary, a church in which the Blessed Eucharist is reserved is to be open to the faithful for at least some hours every day, so that they can pray before the Blessed Sacrament.”

The following story is the story of a unique Eucharistic Miracle as a result of the following .


bettbrunnIn the Eucharistic miracle of Bettbrunn, a very pious farmer in an excess of zeal stole a sacred Host which he brought to his farm in Viehbrunn. One ay, the Host accidentally fell to the ground, but no one could pick up the Sacred Species. Everything was tried, and finally the Bishop of Regensburg intervened. The Bishop was able to pick up the Host only after promising the Lord that he would build a church in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. The report of the miracle spread rapidly and attracted a large number of pilgrims.

The building of the village of Bettbrunn and of the present-day Church of the Holy Savior owe their existence to a Eucharistic miracle that took place in 1125. In the place where the town and the church are located now, there was once only a small farm called Viehbrunn; next to it was a well that was used to give water to the livestock. The owner was a man who was deeply devoted to the Most Holy Sacrament. This man lived an hour and a half away from the parish church of Tholling and he was not always able to attend Mass. Because of his zeal, he decided to solve the problem of not always being able to attend church by secretly stealing a Sacred Host and taking the Blessed Sacrament home with him. The farmer took the stick that he always brought with him and made an opening on the top end of it, into which he placed the Sacred Host. Every day, when the livestock were resting, he stuck his stick into the ground and knelt before the Most Holy Sacrament for many hours. For several months, the man continued in this manner until one day, without thinking, he impulsively threw the stick with the Blessed Sacrament at a herd that had strayed too far.

IMG_1631The Host fell on the ground and the farmer, deeply saddened, bent down to pick up the Blessed Sacrament. Every attempt to lift the Host up proved to be futile and when he did not know what else to do he sent for the parish priest of Tholling. But the priest was also not able to pick up the Blessed Sacrament and finally they approached the Bishop Hartwich of Regensburg, who immediately went to the place of the miracle with all his clergymen. Only when he promised to build a chapel in that place did he succeed in picking up the Host from the ground. In 1125, the building of the chapel was completed and the precious relic was kept in this place until 1330 when a fire destroyed everything. The chapel was later reconstructed and in its interior they placed one of the pillars that had been saved from the fire.

With our investigation of these Eucharistic Miracles and the Marian Apparitions, time after time Jesus and Mary both have requested for churches to be built at these locations.  Why would that be? Why would the Lord want these churches to be placed all over the world? It is clear that he wants people everywhere to receive him in the Eucharist and for Eucharistic Adoration.  Miracles are happening and the Church is vibrant and alive where the Mass and Eucharistic devotion is central.

Jesus asks the question,  “Could you not watch  one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”  Mark 14:37-38

The Catholic Defender: Daddy’s Girl Remembered

Mother's Day and Father's Day are already past us this year, but I couldn't resist this great video my Daughter Petra made for me while I was in Iraq. Today when family, marriage, even children are assaulted by the left wing elements today. It's like they forget where they themselves have come from.

But all families would do well by imitating the Holy Family model! The scripture tells us that Mary pondered these things in her heart. We too should ponder these things as we reflect the meaning of all this. St. Joseph was a great provider with strong faith and trust in God. He gives a great example for all fathers. Joseph and Mary would first be Jesus protectors, then teachers. All this happiness is celebrated with the coming of the Shepherds and the magi bearing gifts of Gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Mary, is like every other mother who loves their children. She is the role model of motherhood. Whenever I see a statue or picture of May with the Christ Child, I reflect the great love between a mother and her child. The Christmas song “Silent Night” makes this scene come alive for me.

Joseph 2Every child should be loved like this. St. Joseph is a great model in his role of fatherhood. His leadership, his love for Jesus and Mary.

God entrusted his Son to St.Joseph making him one of the world’s greatest dad’s!

These first few joyous days will quickly change as danger is coming. Powerful forces seek to find the Christ child to kill him.

Not only King Herod wants baby Jesus dead, so does the king of darkness. Revelation 12:3 states, “Then another sign appeared in the sky; it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on it’s head were seven diadems”.

This would appear very terrible for any family with a small child to overcome. However, when you have God’s protection, all things are possible. Jesus had to rely on the faithfulness of his parents as they are entrusted with the greatest mission the world will ever receive. Nobody ever did it any better than Joseph and Mary.

Prayer for the family:

Heavenly Father, Please shine your light upon my family. Give us strength to overcome all of the difficulties that we are dealing with now and protect us against any and all problems we may encounter in the future. O Lord, please bring us together as we are meant to be. May the love that binds us only grow stronger as we fulfill the destiny you have laid out for us.

Grant my family forgiveness for any sins we have committed. May we also forgive one another Lord, as it is sometimes difficult to do.

Bless us Lord, In your name I pray, Amen

The Catholic Defender: June 13th, Feast Of St. Anthony Of Padua

anthony 6Today, June 13th, is the feast day of one of my favorite Saints, St. Anthony of Padua.

Like St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony was born into a wealthy family, he would give all that up to follow Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

From age 15, he would learn the importance of finding the riches that God offers.

Psalms 45:13 teaches that the rich (in spirit) seeks Our Lady’s favor, where Our Lady is, there also is Our Lord.

Throughout the life of St. Anthony, he first sought to obey Jesus out of love for Jesus.

St. Anthony would join the Canons Regular of St. Augustine.

In 1220 A.D., five Franciscans that St. Anthony knew, were martyred by Muslims in Morocco which led St. Anthony’s desire to become a Franciscan.

Once a Franciscan, it didn’t take long before St. Francis would recognize the gifts that God was working through St. Anthony.

St. Anthony francisSAINT FRANCIS died on October 3, 1226. But shortly before his death, Francis appeared to St. Anthony. In September, 1226, at an assembly of Franciscan friars at Arles, St. Anthony was preaching “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”. As St. Anthony was speaking, St. Francis appeared in the room suspended in the air. St. Francis was blessing the Franciscans gathered and blessed the work of St. Anthony.

St Anthony became known as one of the chosen disciples and companions of St Francis. He would refer to St. Frances as his “Vicar”, “was preaching one day before the Pope and the Cardinals in Consistory, there were therefore present at that moment men of different countries- Greeks and Latins, French and Germans, Slavs and English and men of many other different languages and dialects. And being inflamed by the Holy Spirit and inspired with apostolic eloquence, he preached and explained the word of God so effectively, devoutly, subtly, clearly and understandably that all who were assembled at that Consistory, although they spoke different languages, clearly and distinctly heard and understood everyone of his words as if he had spoken in each of their languages. Therefore they were all astounded and filled with devotion, for it seemed to them that the former miracle of the Apostles at the time of Pentecost had been renewed, when by the power of the Holy Spirit they spoke in different languages. “And in amazement, just like in the Acts of the Apostles they said to one another: “Is he not a Spaniard?’ How then are we all hearing him in the language of the country where we were born-we Greeks and Latins, French and Germans, Slavs and English, Lombards and foreigners?”

StAnthonyPadua-young-232x300It was not only at this consistory that St. Anthony’s gift of tongues was utilized.  It is written that while preaching in Italy he spoke in perfect Italian, and while in France he preached in French, although he had never studied these languages. Also remarkable is the fact that “the simple-minded and the most ignorant listeners were capable of fully comprehending all he said; and his voice, though gentle and sweet, was distinctly heard at a very extraordinary distance from the speaker.”

It is quite clear here that St. Anthony’s tongues was languages similar to the original Pentecost. Would you then be surprised to find that St. Francis would see the power of the Spirit working in St. Anthony?

Another interesting case related to St. Anthony is as follows, a man was murdered and the criminals threw the body of the man in a field that happened to be St. Anthony’s Father’s land. Because of the circumstantial evidence, it didn’t look good for the accused?

An angel came to St. Anthony and took him hundreds of miles away nearly instantly to his home to defend his Father.

St. AnthonyWhat did St. Anthony do that sprung his Father? You guessed it, God raised the dead man from the grave just like Lazarus of old.  When the raised man testified who killed him, St. Anthony’s Father was off the hook.

After the case was quickly alleviated, St. Anthony asked the man if he would like to stay, he would be granted more time. The man thanked him for the offer, but because he was already saved in Purgatory, he did not want to jeopardize his Salvation, so he went back to the dead. What a story, God is good all the time!

Debating with heretics of his time, the Lord Jesus was pleased to show his anointing on St. Anthony using a school of fish. This story is mindful of God reproving the ignorance of Balaam talking to his ass?

Unfortunately, at Rimini, there were a number of heretics who wanted to challenge St. Anthony. In the presence of these heretics, St. Anthony, inspired by God, went to the sea where the river runs into the sea and said, “Listen to the word of God, O ye fishes of the sea and of the river, seeing that the faithless heretics refuse to do so.”

At last St Anthony, inspired by God, went down to the sea-shore, where the river runs into the sea, and having placed himself on a bank between the river and the sea, he began to speak to the fishes as if the Lord had sent him to preach to them, and said: “Listen to the word of God, O ye fishes of the sea and of the river, seeing that the faithless heretics refuse to do so.”

St. Anthony fishImmediately, as in response, a great multitude of various fish approached the bank where St. Anthony was preaching.  This greatly impacted the heretics who were reduced to silence. Literally, a school of fish were paying attention to St. Anthony. from smallest to the largest fish. Clearly a sign from the Lord.

St. Anthony said to the fish, “My brothers the fishes, you are bound, as much as is in your power, to return thanks to your Creator, who has given you so noble an element for your dwelling; for you have at your choice both sweet water and salt; you have many places of refuge from the tempest; you have likewise a pure and transparent element for your nourishment. God, your bountiful and kind Creator, when he made you, ordered you to increase and multiply, and gave you his blessing. In the universal deluge, all other creatures perished; you alone did God preserve from all harm. He has given you fins to enable you to go where you will. To you was it granted, according to the commandment of God, to keep the prophet Jonas, and after three days to throw him safe and sound on dry land. You it was who gave the tribute-money to our Saviour Jesus Christ, when, through his poverty, he had not wherewith to pay. By a singular mystery you were the nourishment of the eternal King, Jesus Christ, before and after his resurrection. Because of all these things you are bound to praise and bless the Lord, who has given you blessings so many and so much greater than to other creatures.”

With the sight of the fish responding to St. Anthony, he prayed these words, “Blessed be the eternal God; for the fishes of the sea honor him more than men without faith, and animals without reason listen to his word with greater attention than sinful heretics.”

This did not end the miraculous scene, even more fish increased and none left and this was witnessed by the people touching their hearts to repentance. The Priests were busy that day!

St. Anthony muleDespite all that occurred with the miracle of the fish, there was one heretic who was obstinate, he would not believe St. Anthony. He could not bring himself to accept the Eucharist.

As St. Anthony sat in the town square contemplating the wonders of God, this heretic made this proposition to St. Anthony. The unbelieving heretic who owned a near by farm, made this challenge to St. Anthony. He would starve his mule for three days. After three days, he would bring his mule right here in this town square for all to see. If the mule would prostrate before the Monstrance with the Eucharist, then this heretic would confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord of the Universe and pledge his faith in the Blessed Sacrament. St. Anthony, inspired by God, took the challenge.

Because of the miracle of the fish, there was great anticipation among the people of Rimini. On the appointed day, people gathered in the town square awaiting for the face off to begin. St. Anthony approached from the west towards the center of the town as the heretic came from the other side of the town with his mule. As they met in the middle of the town square, a large pan of oats and a bundle of hay were placed in front of the mule. The people were gathered with great anticipation as the mule ignored the feed and instead, approached St. Anthony and fell on her knees before the Monstrance with the Eucharist. With great joy among the people, the heretic yielded before the miracle and made his profession of faith and went to Confession.  With this scene, St. Anthony kind of took something from a Clint Eastwood playbook!

St. Anthony martyresLadies and Gentlemen, what a great testimony this is, and how often we meet people today that displays such lack of faith. God’s work is never done.

With all these events taking place, St. Francis recognized the powerful preaching of St. Anthony.  Today, St. Anthony is remembered as the “Hammer of Heretics”! He is also recognized as the Patron Saint for lost and found articles. The following is a story that happened to me:

One morning as I was in my office (when I served at the New Orleans MEPS) I placed my keys and wallet in or on my desk when I went out to do PT.  When I came back, we were knee deep in applicants so I helped out with the physicals until almost noon when I went back into my office to change into my uniform.

At this time, I could not find my keys. I looked everywhere for them. I asked everyone to include going to the other sections in the MEPS, but to no avail. I could not find the keys. I ended up having to get a ride home with a friend. Gigi and Matt actually went back for me and got the jeep to bring it home.

St. Anthony 3The next day, I had to borrow Gigi’s keys to drive the jeep to work. During the day, I could not find the keys and so another day passed and I was about to think the keys were gone for good. On the third day, I still did not find the keys and still borrowed Gigi’s keys to drive the jeep.

About noon, I left the MEPS to go over to another base where they had an Army PX so I could get something from clothing sales. On my way back I decided to stop at Kentucky Fried Chicken for a quick pick up for lunch. I placed my order, drove around to the window, paid my bill and waited for my lunch.

I was still upset about losing my keys that I left on my desk, when I asked St. Anthony to help me on this issue. I felt strange that he didn’t pop up into my mind before this, when a stranger walked up from behind me, someone I never seen before, and asked me if these were my keys?

I was shocked as I sat there at Kentucky Fried Chicken, with my keys that I hadn’t seen in three days, right in my hands. Nobody, not even me knew that I was going to be there when I was there. I almost decided to go up the road to McDonald’s for a hamburger but at the last second turned in where I turned in.

june13_st anthonyThe individual was civilian, would never had been on an Military base, and didn’t know me from Adam. Shocked with my keys in hand, the stranger was gone as quickly as he came. I called Gigi to let her know what just happened and she thought I was high on something.

The prayer of the Saints around the Throne of Heaven is very powerful, we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses who make of the Catholic Church “Hall of Fame”, those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. They do praise the Lord and live in perfect happiness.

St. Anthony has been a friend of my wife’s too as she has found several things that she had lost, he’s been a friend.

*Best of DTB #316* The Guardian Angel: The Eucharistic Miracle Of Augsburg Germany, 1194

faithPlease remember that our faith is not founded on Eucharistic miracles, but on the proclamation of the Lord Jesus, received with faith through the action of the Holy Spirit.

We believe because we have believed in the preaching (see Gal. 3:5; also in Rom 10:17: “Faith depends on hearing and hearing by the word of Christ; and, in turn, preaching depends on the word of Christ.”

“Believing is an act of the intellect, which under the influence of the will moved by God through grace, gives its consent to divine truth.” St. Thomas, Summa Theologiae.

Our faith in the Eucharist has as it center Christ. A Christian is not obliged to believe in Eucharistic miracles or any Private Revelations.

faith 1In principle, however, the believer must not exclude the possibility that God may intervene in the extraordinary way in any given moment, place, event or person.

The prudence of the Church is fully justified, since some may think God forgot to tell us something, attributing excessive importance to the miraculous and extraordinary, and easily and excessively believing suggestions or illusions.

Eucharistic Miracles can be useful and fruitful aids to our faith. For example: They help us go beyond the visible and the perceptible and admit the existence of something beyond. Also, they can give us an opportunity, to speak of public Revelation and of its importance to the Church and to Christians.

Eucharistic Miracle of Augsburg Germany 1194

faith 2The Eucharistic miracle of Augsburg is known locally as Wonderbarlichen Gutes – “The Miraculous Good.” It is described in numerous books and historical documents which can be consulted in Augsburg’s public library. A stolen Host was transformed into bleeding Flesh. Over the course of the centuries, several scientific analyses of the Sacred Host have been carried out. These have always confirmed that human Flesh and Blood are present. Today the Convent of the Heileg Dreuz (Holy Cross) is under the care of the Dominican Fathers.

In 1194, a woman from Augsburg who was particularly devoted to the Blessed Sacrament hid a Host in her handkerchief, took It home and placed It in a wax container inside a cupboard. (In those days it was very difficult to find tabernacles in churches for Eucharistic adoration. Only in 1264, with the introduction of the Feast of Corpus Christi, did such devotion become commonplace.

faith 3Five years passed, and on the 11th of May 1199, the woman, tormented by remorse, confessed what she had done to the superior of the convent of Heilig Kreuz. Br. Berthold, who had her bring the Host back. The priest opened the wax container and saw that the Host had been transformed into bleeding Flesh. The Host appeared “divided into two parts connected by thin threads of bleeding Flesh.” Father Berthold immediately went to Bishop Udalskalk, who ordered that the miraculous Host be “transferred, accompanied by the clergy and people, to the cathedral and exhibited in a crystal monstrance for public worship.”

The miracle continued: the Host began to grow and swell, and this phenomenon was seen by all from Easter Sunday until the Feast of St. John the Baptist. Following this, Bishop Udalskalk had the Host brought back to the Convent of the Heilig Kruez and proclaimed that “in memory of such a memorable and extraordinary event,” there should be a special feast each year in honor of the holy relic.

baby-jesus1In 1200, Count Rechber gave Augustinian Fathers a rectangular chest of silver with an opening in front for the placement of the miraculous Host.

Besides the Eucharistic miracle, other extraordinary incidents took place, such as the apparition above the Host of Baby Jesus dressed in white with a radiant face, His forehead encircled by a crown of gold, the bleeding of the church’s crucifix, and the apparition of Jesus blessing the assembly.

Editors note (The Catholic Defender): While I was stationed in Germany, I made a pilgrimage to Augsburg Germany at the site of this Eucharistic Miracle. What a blessing this was to be at the place where God gave such a great sign. This Miracle is still there to this day. One of my Soldiers at the time also went with me on this trip and he would ultimately be received into the Catholic Church.

Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore you profoundly. I offer you the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifference by which he is offended. And, through the infinite merits of his Most Sacred Heart, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners.

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Amen.

The Catholic Defender Presents The Nicholas George Wilcha Story

NGW 4“What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors ans says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance”. (Luke 15:3-7)

I am so happy to present a young man who has recently returned home to the Catholic Faith. Nicholas George Wilcha from Yonkers, New York will appear on www.deepertruthblog radio and give his story.

He told me that this past Sunday, “Pentecost”, was memorable for Nicholas because this was his one year anniversary when he made his full entrance into the Catholic Church.

He is a one year “revert” who continues to grow in his faith.

NGW 1You will notice a wooden necklace that is around his neck that he boldly displays as an exterior that reflects the interior, his heart. This necklace was made in Jerusalem that says “Jesus”.

After 17 years, Nicholas is back in the faith going to Mass and dedicating prayers of thanks, “FAITH, HOPE, and CONFIDENCE in the Lord Jesus Christ. Not conceit, people. Hope everyone had a blessed Pentecost Sunday yesterday. I know I did. I was even sprinkled up close with Holy Water at the 5:30 Mass and faithfully made the Sign of the Cross, and went to St. Denis Catholic Church’s 12:30 Mass earlier in the day. We thank You, Jesus, for the descent of Your Holy Spirit. You promised us the Comforter, and surely, He has come. Amen.

Nicholas takes his faith to the streets where he lives just as the early Christians did many years ago. Matthew 22:9, the Lord tells us to “Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.” Jesus continues, “The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found…”, that is what we do, we bring people to the Mass where the King of Kings is present in the form of bread and wine.

NWGRomans 8:16-17 states, “The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him”.

Our witness to Christ and through that effort, helps bring the captives to the Lord. That is what Nicholas is all about and that is what we all should be about.

The goal is to bring back the sinner to the Church. The Catholic Church is like a hospital that cares for the sick. The Sacraments bring healing of the mind, heart, soul, and sometimes, the body.

James 5:19-20 states, “My brothers, if anyone among you should stray from the truth and someone bring him back, he should know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.”

The Catholic Defender: The Threat Of Red Dawn

fright nightI remember the movie, “Fright Night” that is about a television host Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall) who makes a living fighting late night Hollywood Vampires (Welcome to Fright Night) when he is approached by a teenager who claims to be living next to Jerry Dandridge (Chris Sarandon) who is a vampire.

The line of the movie is when Peter Vincent and his young companion are in the home of Jerry Dandridge who is at the top of the stairs looking down and says, “Welcome to Fright Night, FOR REAL”.

This scene from a cult vampire movie really kind of hits the topic of this article quite well.

The 1984 hit movie, “Red Dawn” captivated audiences all across America which is centered in a Midwestern town. America is invaded by the Soviet Union beginning a World War III scenario. Teenagers escape into the mountains in Colorado and hide out defending their town and America.

Red DawnNovember 2012, there was a remake of Red Dawn that hit the box office, but the 1984 version is still considered the better of the two movies. In both movies, the idea of America being taken over by a foreign power, Russia or North Korea, makes no difference. Clearly, the threat of Communism was the main issue facing Americans and why it was important for Americans to take up arms in the fight for America.

Watching either movie of Red Dawn, Americans were forced to undergo the Communist reprogramming Concentration Camps where people were brainwashed to the Communist philosophy. It was a hard thing to see and you automatically were taken in by the teenagers putting up the fight.

Jerry Dandridge’s warning, “Welcome to Fright Night, For Real” is a wake up call to the threat of the Communist reprogramming Concentration Camps taking place all over America right now. This is not being orchestrated by the Soviet Union or the North Koreans, but from within our own boarders.

mccarthyismIn the 1950′s the concern of the infiltration of Communism into the United States caused the spread of “McCathyism” that was a social/cultural phenomenon. The threat of the Communist infiltration was considered a threat against American ideals and freedoms. However, today, things are much different.

For decades, the public school system has been the product of very liberal left wing ideologies. Basic history is being reorganized where students are not being taught American history. In fact, the liberal media and the Democratic Party prey upon the ignorance of Americans.

In the 1970′s, the fight was over sex education, but in truth, the eradication of religious faith has become a very important factor in public education. College academics has been pushing this Socialist, Marxist agenda for some time. Liberalism is common place and conservatives face all kinds of problems if they do not properly adjust to the “Communist Reprogramming Concentration Camps”.

ND88_arrest-240x162Even Catholic Institutions such as Notre Dame and Georgetown have taken in this reprogramming for the sake of the almighty dollar. They have sold themselves out so much so that last years Notre Dame Senior graduates had only about 15% of the class saying their faith life grew while at College. The rest said that they did not grow and almost 40% said their faith life worsened at Notre Dame.

Faith life in America’s Colleges and Universities have been dropping for decades to this new wave of Atheism. The Gay Agenda is being pushed and taught in the College system as fact encouraging people to leave their faiths. I have experienced this pressure personally. I am a 26 year Military Veteran, not easily swayed, but you take the average 18-25 year old students going to school today in these State Universities, this is a clear class of “Communist Reprogramming Concentration Camps”.

Recently a father was arrested at a public high school parents meeting because he was opposed to his 14 year old daughter being given pornography as a work assignment. I myself was given such assignments at the local College I was attending. You can read about those stories on, “Staying Faithful”, and “Hells Bells”.

veteransWe see the evidence of America’s changing values everywhere, from electing the most liberal anti-Constitutional politician ever to the continued attack on religions freedom. We are witnessing the deconstruction of our Veterans Administration (VA) hospitals that care for American Veterans, there is chaos in the Active Military. The Obama Administration is cutting our Military strength to lower than World War II numbers at a time when other world powers are building strength again. Everything that the Obama Administration has touched has become Chaos from the Economy, jobs, gasoline prices, coal mining, even the whether.

Other scandals such as the IRS and the attack on conservative organizations who oppose Obama, the Housing Market collapsing, the higher taxes, the many public scandals such as Benghazi, millions of Americans losing their health care, people being lied to. The recent swapping of five Terrorist Leaders held at the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp for a definite deserter, maybe much worse.

BillTo the Marxist mindset, it is not how you get to your aims, it is the goal of reaching them. That is progress to them. So Americans hurting, losing freedom, are part of the effort to turn America from the greatest beacon of hope for the world to a third world nation.

The Attacks on Christmas and religious freedom in America is becoming more evident, recently in Colorado, a Christian Baker lost a court decision when Gay Activists wanted to force the baker to make a “wedding cake” for the “gay marriage”? The court sited that a Discrimination Act trumped the Baker’s Constitutional freedom of religion rights. This ruling happened despite the fact that in Colorado, Gay Marriage is still illegal?

Parents are systematically losing their rights when confronted with public school curricula. This is the liberal conditioning of America. What one generation tolerates, the next generation accepts. America turning away from the Constitution is not coming from the outside, it is coming from the inside with a small minority.

wattersThe O’Reily Factor on Fox News features “Watters World” who goes about the Country asking the most basic questions on politics, history, values, and it is really sad the kind of education people have. There is clearly a low information class that the liberals take a strong hold on them. They want them to be ignorant so as to empower the liberal.

Johnny Cash wrote a song called “Ragged Old Flag” that gives a very patriotic message, Obama is pictured in the video refusing to salute or give honor to the American Flag. As Americans, we have an opportunity this November to turn things around and hopefully place those responsible for the many scandals in the Obama Administration to be made responsible.

2 Chronicles 7:19-22 give this important warning, “But if you turn away and forsake my statutes and commands which I placed before you, if you proceed to venerate and worship strange gods, then I will uproot the people from the land I gave them; I will cast from my sight this house which I have consecrated to my honor, and I will make a proverb and a byword among all peoples. This temple which is so exalted everyone passing by it will be amazed and ask: Why has the Lord done this to this land and to this house? And men will answer: They forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers…”

God is America’s only hope, we can’t put our faith in men solely anymore.  It is time that Christians go to their knees and pray for the forgiveness of God to bring back the American Constitution that gives and maintains religious freedom.
