Before I begin my artical on FreeMasonry, I want to encourage anyone who might be interested in this subject, please get John Salza’s book, “Masonary Unmasked”.

He was a former Mason. On 25 July 2008, John Salza is interviewed on “The Abundant Life”, television show. It was aired on EWTN.

I recommend this book and the show which is very informative. You can get the DVD from contacting the Show, “The Abundant Life” or you can catch it on YouTube.

The first Masonic Grande Lodge was formed in 1717, London, England. In America, it first appeared in Philadephia (1730) and Boston (1733). It can be shown that it grew out of medival guilds of the stonemasons. This explains many of the symbols of Freemasonry such that deal with brick laying.

Several American patriots like Ben Franklin, Paul Revere, and George Washington, were Masons. Many of those who framed the Constitution of the United States, such as John Hancock, Samual Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, were Masons.

So why does the Catholic Church have serious concerns and forbids her churchmen to join it? What’s all the fuss? According to the Seattle Times in a special October edition in 1982, it reported that the average age joining the Masons was 38 years old.

The Masons are seen supporting hospitals, children’s burn centers, and handicapped children. A Christian is faced with several situations that put them in compromise.

How you wonder? When a Christian is faced with holding an authority equal or greater than the Apostolic authority of the Church especially when you have a secret society that traditionally is anti-Catholic, you have real problems.

Jesus established the Catholic Church giving it his authority. Canon Law is the authority in matters of faith and morals (Matthew 28:16-20). No Christian should bind themselves to any other spiritual authority other than the Church Christ founded.

In what is called the ‘York’ rite in the 7th degree, Masons learn the secret name of the Masonic god and takes upon himself the password of the ‘Royal Arch Member’, “I am that I am”.

Candidates for that degree are presented in groups of three, and it requires that same number of ‘Royal Arch Masons’ to pronounce the sacred name.

The name “Jaobulon” is taken from the following:
Jao is the Greek word for Yahweh or Jehovah,

but is a rendering of the name ‘Baal’ (1 Kings 18:22),

and the ‘On’ is the name used in the Babylonian mysteries to call upon the name of the evil deity, ‘Osiris’.

What an unholy alliance! The Trinity is a striking contrast that the Catholic Church teaches, one God in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We have the Creator, the Redeemer, and the Sanctifier all in one, who wants to be the center of our life.

The Name of Jesus is the name above all names (Philippians 2:9-10), the name according to Ed Becker, once a leading authority on the subject of Masonry, states, “The Lord Jesus Christ, his name cannot be lawfully uttered in testimony or prayer in virtually any Masonic Lodge”.

The Masons will equate all the “gods” of men as equal taking what they believe as ‘good’ from all of them and combine them. One popular question heard a lot even from well meaning Christians is, “Don’t you think Jesus and Buddha are the same god”? Don’t you think they just represent different cultures and backgrounds”?

The answer will always be ‘NO’! Jesus states that no man comes to the Father but by Jesus, who is his only begotten Son (Matthew 7:21). Freemasonry declares that its deity, the “Great Architect of the Universe”, can be worshipped by all men, whether they be Buddhist, Christians, Muslims, or Hindus, ‘without controversy”.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me”. The Masons maintain the Bible “no better or no worse than any other holy book”. The Masons declare that man can be saved by his own labors without faith in Jesus sacrifice on the cross.

The Masons blaspheme the name of God by associating His name with pagan fertility gods such as Baal, they reject the doctrine of hell. Freemasons require that men swear oaths on a Bible in the name of God including mutilation and murder of human beings (Duncan, Ritual, pp. 35, 65, 96).

The Masons demand members to call their leaders titles like “Worshipful Master”, and kneel before them. Going back to the founding Fathers of our Country, check the overlay (map) of Washington D.C.

It was laid out in the form of central Masonic symbols; the square, the compass, and the rule. Take the map, face the capital building from the mall and using the capital as the head or the top of the compass.

The left leg is represented by Pennsylvania Avenue

and the right leg by Maryland Avenue.

The square is found in the usual Masonic position with the intersection of Canal Street and Louisiana Avenue.

The left leg of the compass stands on the White House

and the right leg stands on the Jefferson Memorial.

The circle drive and short streets behind the Capital complete the picture to form the head and ears of what Satanists call the “Goat of Mendes” or “Goat’s Head”. The goat head happens to be the universal symbol of Satanism (Matthew 26:31-35).

On top of the White House is an inverted five-pointed star, called a pentagram. This is a high-level symbol of witchcraft and Satanism. The point rests squarely on the White House and is facing south in the true occult fashion. It sits within the intersections of Connecticut and Vermont Avenues north to Dupont and Logan circles with Rhode Island and Massachussetts going to Washington Circle to the west and Mount Vernon Square on the east.

The center of the pentagram is 16th Street where 13 blocks due north of the very center of the White House. The Masonic House of the Temple sits at the top of this occult iceberg. The Washington Monument stands perfect line to the intersecting point to form the Masonic square, stretching from the House of the Temple to the Capital Building.

Within the right triangle of the pentagram sits many of the headquarters buildings of our government such as the Justice Department, U.S. Senate, and the I.R.S.

Most of the federal building have had a cornerstone laid in a Masonic ritual and specific Masonic paraphernalia placed in each one. These cornerstones contain Masonic documents showing that the building have been dedicated to the god of masonry, “Jao-Bul-On”.

The Five Solas are:
1. Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone)

2. Sola Fide (faith alone)

3. Sola Gratia (grace alone)

4. Sola Christus (Christ alone)

5. Soli Deo Gloria (glory to God alone)

All of the above were the rallying cry of Protestantism during the time of the Reformation.

Since then they have mutated and adapted to different varying forms of Protestantism, but this is the basic tenant of what these “Five Solas” are founded. Let’s take a look at these Solas one at a time.

Sola Scriptura:

Sola scriptura is the basline belief that the bible is the only authority and inspiration of God’s word. No doctrines are accepted without the Bible’s definition or foundation. From the Catholic response to this, all doctrines are either explicitly or implicitly found in the bible. But it is deeper than that.

The Protestants were rejecting the Catholic authority directly opposing the Papacy, redefining the Sacraments even calling them “ordinances” thus denying their relevance. When looking at the history of God’s people, Sola scriptura did not exist either in the Old Testament nor the Apostolic Tradition.

The Old Testament and the Jewish history verify the Catholic position perfectly, namely; Scripture has always required an interpreter. From Moses to Pope Francis, God’s people have always held an office of “teacher”. That is what the Magisterium of the Catholic Church is, the office of “Teacher”.

The Jewish oral law is very simular to Catholic development of dogma and historical growth. The Jewish oral teaching was stored in the Mishnah that became the baseline for the Halakhuh (legal teaching). This was practical due to the Palestinian and Babylonian talmuds:

“The Talmud (התלמוד) is considered an authoritative record of rabbinic discussions on Jewish laws, ethics, customs, legends and stories. It expands on the earlier writings in the Torah and Mishnah, and is the basis for all later codes of Jewish law). The Talmud is a combination of a core text, the Mishnah and a later commentary, called the gemara (“completion”). There is only one Mishnah, but there are two distinct gemaras, the Yerushalmi and the Bavli. Both gemaras were developed by many rabbis over a few centuries.”

The “Halakhuh” for the Jewish tradition is comparable to the Canon Laws for Catholic Authority and tradition. So the Old Testament analogy is closely in line with Catholic traditions and foundations. The Catholic Church is based from Scripture. Consider how the Old Testament books were processed in time.

The Torah was written by Moses, prior to Moses, the Genesis story was maintained through oral tradition. The “Pentateuch”, the “Torah” are the first five books of Jewish and Christian scriptures, these books were gathered 500 years after King David. During this time, God moved through the authority of Moses, the Priesthood of Levi, the judges, the prophets, and the Kings. In comparison, the Catholic Faith was founded by Christ, His Apostles, the Priesthood of Christ.

It took nearly 370 years before the Catholic Church finalized the New Testament Canon of Scripture (393-396 Council of Hippo). Tradition played a major role in handing down truth through all generations. St. Paul states (2 Thessalonians 2:15), “So then, brethren, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter”.

St. Paul also wrote St. Timothy (2 Timothy 1:13-14), “Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus; guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us”.

This primarily had to be carry out orally as it would take the Church nearly 400 years to comprise the New Testament. The Holy Spirit was imparted to the Catholic Church on Pentecost, which by the Time St. Paul wrote this letter, would have been about 40 years. Taking a look at Jewish Tradition, Christ and His Apostles recognized the Jewish oral tradition raising some of it literally to the level of written revelation. Here are some examples:

Matthew 2:23 says, “and he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, ‘He shall be called a Nazarene”. This prophecy was passed down orally rather than from scripture. It is not in the Old Testament.

Matthew 23:2-3 says, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; so practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice”. The seat of Moses is not found in the Old Testament, but it is found in the “Mishna“. This is clearly the teaching succession from Moses on down. Christians today have “Apostolic Succession” which is the legitimate authority of Christ passed down through the Catholic Church.

1 Corinthians 10:4 says, “…and all drank from the supernatural Rock which followed them, and the Rock was Christ”. The movement of the “Rock” is not found in the Old Testament, it is through Jewish tradition that St. Paul was speaking from making his point.

1 Peter 3:19 says, “…in which he went and preached to the spirits in prison”. St. Peter is describing Christ’s journey to “sheol” (prison) is not in the Old Testament writing, it is taken from the Jewish apocalyptic book 1 Enoch (12-16).

Jude 9 says, “But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, disputed about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a reviling judgement upon him, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you”. The issue of the body of Moses is not found in the Old Testament.

Jude 14-15 says, “It was of these also that Enoch in the seventh generation from Adam prophesied, saying, ‘behold, the Lord came with his holy myriads, to execute judgement on all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness which they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against him”. This is not in the Old Testament, but refers to 1 Enoch 1:9.

There are more, but I wanted to show that the new Testament writings literally placed into writing Old Testament traditions not found in the (OT) Scriptures. These were placed to the order of divine scripture.

Sola Scriptura cannot and did not have a place in any God’s teaching authority. The Jewish authority was centered from Moses, the “lawgiverLevitical Priesthood carried down the “ordinances” of the Lord which were a “type” of the New Testament authority.”, David, the household of David’s kingship and Elijah, the prophets. The

Jesus fulfills Moses, David, and Elijah as He is the Priest, Prophet, and King. The Priesthood of Christ carries the Sacraments of grace centered in a new Covenant.

One last case against Sola scriptura, coming from the biblical text itself:

2 Peter 1:18-20 says, “First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God”.

2 Peter 3:14-17 says, “Therefore, beloved, since you wait for these, be zealous to be found by him without blemish, and at peace. And count the forbearance of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, speaking of this, as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, beware lest you be carried away with the error of lawless men and lose your own stability”. This is exactly what “lawless men did in creating these “Five Solas“.

Martin Luther, the founder and “Father” of Protestantism, refereed to Sola Fide as the doctrine that the Church stood or fell. Since he placed such importance on this and contemporary Protestants continue Sola Fide’s belief system, let’s take a look at it.

Sola Fide

Protestants declare we are ‘being declared right by God”, and they assume this means salvation. Faith is the means by which we are justified by God. Martin Luther once said “sin valiantly, but believe more valiantly”, this is not exactly what the scriptures or the tradition of the Church.

Galations 5:21 St. Paul warns, “I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things (sin) shall not inherit the kingdom of God”. St. Paul exposes Luther’s example above as what “lawless men” have processed in the doctrine of Sola Fide. Taking a look at the scripture, what does it say referring to “faith alone”?

Martin Luther referred to the book of James in the New Testament as a “gospel of straw”, that James had “no backbone” because it differed from Luther’s “Sola Fide” doctrine. James wrote, “You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone”.

Matthew 25:31-46. Jesus clearly states, “out of my sight, you condemned, into that everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels… As often as you neglected to do it to one of these least ones, you neglected to do it to me. These will go off to eternal punishment and the just to eternal life”.

As important as faith is, Jesus doesn’t speak to that issue, He is speaking of works that He fully expects His people to conduct. The Lord hears the cry of the poor, we become His hands when we seek to do His will! The real issue is the Protestants rejection of the Sacraments and the work that God does through them. The Sacraments could not be “life saving” or “necessary” because they would be the products of “works”!

Philippians 2:16 states, “As I look to the day of Christ, you give me cause to boast that I did not run the race in vain or work to no purpose. Even if my life is to be poured out as a libation, over the sacrificial service of your faith. I am glad of it and rejoice with you”.

St. Paul also says (Philippians 2:12), “So then, my dearly beloved, obedient as always to my urgings, work with anxious concern to achieve your salvation…”

I’ve made this point before, if you are studying for a test and the teacher during review stomps his foot or pounds his hands on the desk to insure you get the point, what should you do? You should take note of the essential information! Well, what does God tell us about Judgement? Our finals, the test we should all want to pass!

Jesus states, “But he who ACTS in the truth comes into the light, to make clear that his DEEDS are done in God (John 3:21)”. Romans 2:5 states, “In spite of this, your hard and impenitent heart is storing up retribution for that day of wrath when the just judgement of God will be revealed, when He will repay every man for what he has DONE…”

1 Peter 1:17 says, “In prayer you call upon the Father who judges each one justly on the basis of his ACTIONS. Since this is so, conduct yourselves, reverently during this sojourn in a strange land”. Hebrews 13:21 states, “Furnish you with all that is good, THAT YOU MAY DO HIS WILL. Though Jesus Christ may carry out in you all that is pleasing to Him. To Christ be the glory forever! Amen.”

Revelation 22:12 states, “Remember, I am coming soon! I bring with me the reward that will be given to each man as his CONDUCT DESERVES.” John 3:36 says, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever DISOBEYS the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him (Romans 5:9)”.Scripture after scripture tells us we will be held accountable to our deeds. We must do the will of the Father! If you KEEP His Commandments, you SHOW you love Him! The Catholic Church recognize that we must be obedient in faith. The skull has what we call “infused joints” that keeps our brain protected and intact. We need each part for it to function properly. Likewise, faith and good works are infused, both are essential. Jesus tells us to “store up heavenly treasure that no one can steal”.

Our faith must produce fruit! Don’t take your faith and bury it in the backyard (Matthew 25:24-28). Faith is a gift! Good works are the product of our response to that gift. Salvation is not earned so that we can punch our own ticket, but good works that pleases God and are God ordained makes that ticket complete. “The harvest is plenty but the workers are few”!

Sola Gratia

The Protestants development of this new gospel says that grace is always ‘efficacious” without the cooperation of man. That salvation comes by God’s grace alone. Ephesians 2:8 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God–not because of works, lest any man should boast”.

Grace is a free gift of God not merited by man. The Catholic Church maintains that a person must “cooperate” and accept the free gift from God. Grace and faith must be nurtured, fed or it will die. To live in sin is to live in bondage. That is in essence, throwing God’s gift right back at him. We should never place our selves in that position, but the Lord is forgiving and merciful. That to is grace from God!

Continuing with Ephesians 2, when you get to verse 10, it says, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them”. Again, we must “cooperate” and accept this free gift and nurture it with love, with devotion, with the Sacraments which God imputes grace, He showers His grace upon us. The Protestants use their theology of Sola gratia as a way to show the Sacraments are not necessary.

Solus Christus

Catholic and Protestants can agree who Jesus is, but there is major disagreement over Christ’s teaching and authority. The basic question is: “Is the Catholic Church the one true Faith founded by Christ, commissioned by Christ and sent by Christ to go to all the nations with the true Gospel or are the Protestants correct in rebelling against it? It all boils down to that!

Through Christ establishing the Catholic Faith, all the systems of the Faith, the Sacraments, the liturgies, the Scriptures, the traditions, are governed by an authority Christ gives the Church. Protestants will challenge you why you need to go to a priest when you can go to Christ “alone”.

They fail to realize that it is in obedience to Christ that we go to “Confession”or “The anointing of the Sick”! Christ established the Papacy giving us a visible head, a chief steward in holding fast to the “Deposit of Faith” entrusted by Our Lord to His Apostles.

This includes Mother Mary and the Saints as well. Jesus is the mediator between God and man and it is through this mediation that the Saints in heaven can pray for us here on earth. Mary is not competing with Jesus, she is leading people to Him! The Saints are not declared ‘god’s', they are given for us as role models, the Catholic ‘Hall of Fame” as their lives point the way to Jesus.

Tom T. Hall, a Country singer, use to sing, “Me and Jesus have our own thing going, me and Jesus, got it all worked out”. That is not the Church of the New Testament.

Soli Deo gloria

1 Corinthians 2:9 says, But as it is written, ‘what no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man concieved, what God has prepared for those who love him”. Rich Mullins, in his journey to the Catholic Faith recognized that his Protestant foundations were beginning to crack when he discovered that the Catholic Church did not overrate the Saints. He recognized that his upbringing did underrate the Saints and this was a revelation to him. Jesus is the king of Kings and Lord of Lords and there is none besides him. Yet, he offers us a crown of immortality forever with him in His Father’s house. When we honor Mary, the Saint’s we are really honoring God!

In closing, we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses marked with the sign of faith who are praying for us, pulling for us, loving us as they intercede for us. “Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith…”

*BEST OF DTB #56* The Catholic Defender: Constantine, first Catholic Head of State

During one of our field operations, we were on a 30 day rotation at Grafenwoehr Germany where we were supporting live fire ranges.
I had my entire track vehicles located at different ranges and I was at range 301, a helicopter range.
That was interesting to watch them in attack mode as they hit their targets with great precision.
We were set up for a week rotation as our Soldiers were going through these ranges. Communication was maintained through the safety tower as we waited near the base at the tower always on the ready! When everyone else is training, for the Medic, it is always real world as accidents can always happen.

One day, a Captain ran towards my position at the back of my vehicle. I was sitting in the track studying some material and quickly responded to the cry for help. I grabbed my trusty old M-5 Aid Bag and ran to the scene. A German National working for the United States Government, had collapsed in a back shed with chest pain.

He could not understand English and I could not understand German. I asked a series of Questions through an interpreter. I first wanted to know how long he had chest pain. As I was asking this from him, I was checking his blood pressure and pulse. Taking a subjective look at the patient. His Blood pressure was very high and his pulse was racing.

I asked him if he had been seen by a doctor before for chest pain. He responded “no”. I asked if he had chest pain before? He replied “yes” as he continued to point to his chest. He stated that he would occasionally have such pain when he would work. He said that he never felt he needed a doctor before as the pain would subside with rest.
I asked him how long he had these kinds of episodes? His response was “two years”. From what I was seeing, I believed he was suffering from ‘unstable angina pectoris’ and that he was quickly heading for a massive heart attack.
Up to this point, he had been dealing with angina pectorus but was never diagnosed. I began to encourage him to let us take him to the hospital but he didn’t want to go. It was like he wanted me to give him something for the pain, the pressure he felt in his chest. I began to implore him to go to the hospital now!
I stressed to the interpreter the importance for him to go now and after a couple of minutes we took him to the hospital. When he got to the Emergency Room, he developed into a full blown heart attack. He survived, but had he not been where he was, he would have died out there in that shed. I saved his life simply by knowing the vital signs and some practical information I have through my training.
The next day, I had a four star General land at our site by helicopter to congratulate me on saving a life. About two hours later, a two star General landed by helicopter and awarded me with the impact ARCOM. As the General was flying away from our site, I radioed my team of medics what had just happened.
One of my Soldiers standing up in the back of his track with the back hatch opened was questioning the validity of my story. He was in total disbelief. As he was speaking, a helicopter flying overhead began to hover above the track near the position of my medic. As he looked up to the helicopter, it was the General giving him a smile and a salute as my Soldier was staring in great disbelief and awe.
It wasn’t long after that the Command responded to the information being transmitted over the radio and was asking for clarification on what was happening. I would have another General arrive to my position, several Colonels, Majors, Captains wanting to take a picture with me next to my track. This was a most amazing thing.
The next day, while I was still at Range 301, someone had distributed some anti-Catholic material to my troops. They in turn presented this to me. I couldn’t believe it. When we went back from the ranges to the main post for a break, I was hoping to run into this individual who had been passing this “information” for me. My prayer was answered quickly as that very evening, he ran into me at the shower.
He was a ‘Baptist’ deacon who wanted to challenge me for my Catholic beliefs. I was more than willing to comply as we debated issues before the shower, during the shower and after the shower. We had to have talked for more that 2 hours. He was under the belief that Constantine was the founder of the Catholic Faith, he even thought that Constantine was the first Pope?
Bishop Sheen once said that there were not 100 people who hate the Catholic Faith for what it is, but there were millions of people who hate the Catholic Faith for what they think it is. There are many people who have been taught to reject the Catholic Faith. In protesting the Catholic Church they believe in a new doctrine developed and implemented by Martin Luther called, ‘Sola Scriptura’.
As he communicated his statements in what he believed about Constantine, I countered his arguments by explaining the lost history he was not taught or aware of. The Catholic Faith was established by Christ.
To understand the Catholic Faith, the Papacy, you would have to understand the foundation laid by Judaism. That the Keys given to the Household of King David (Isaiah 22) Jesus as the ‘Son of David’, superseded the keys and gave them to his ‘Royal Stewart’, Simon, Son of Bar-Jona (Matthew 16:19).
The keys designated an office. In the Old Testament, the ‘Chief Stewart’ held the authority in the absence of the King. Ourside of the King, he was the authority, “when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open. I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family; On him shall hang all the glory of his family: descendants and offspring, all the little dishes, from bowls to jugs” (Isaiah 22:22-24).
Jesus, in giving the keys to St. Peter, Matthew 16: 19 continues, “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven”. What was a temporal kingdom God established in King David, Jesus established a universal and eternal Kingdom through a new Covenant.
The Household of David was warned in Jeremiah 31:31-34, “The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers the day I took them by the hand to lead them forth from the land of Egypt; for they broke my covenant and I had to show myself their master…”

God is speaking to the Passover that was a perpetual Memorial for the Jews to keep in honor of this covenant.
Jesus transforms the Passover meal establishing the ‘new covenant’, “While they were eating (the Passover meal) Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, ‘take and eat; this is my body. Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins”(Matthew 26:26-28).
The cup of blessing we share at Mass (1 Corinthians 10:16) was the third cup in the Passover meal. There was a 4th cup associated with the Passover meal that was not presented at the Last Supper. Jesus waited till the appropriete time on the cross (John 19:30).
When Jesus said, “It is finished”, he was speaking that the work had been done, through his sacrificial act, the new covenant was now initiated. To understand the Mass, you have to know something of the Old Testament foundations.
As I continued to explain these mysteries of truth, my opponent danced around looking for something solid to find to show his point of view. He tried to lay the foundation that Constantine brought in paganism into the Church. He presented the fact that Catholics pray for the dead believing this came from Constantine.
Again, to understand the Catholic Faith, you must have an understanding of the Old Testament foundation. From 2 Maccabees 12:42, it states, “Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be blotted out. The text goes on to say regarding the prayer for those fallen, “But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin”.
In sharing this scripture, I shared with him 1 Peter 3:18, “For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit. In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now”.
Before the Lord’s sacrifice, heaven was closed and everyone in the Old Testament up to this crucifixion scene, the spirits of all who were saved were in this ‘State’. With this understanding, did this teaching close with the New Testament? Absolutely not! Can we find in the New Testament evidence of praying for the dead indicating belief that the saved had a ‘State’ of preservation for the great day when Jesus returns? Yes there is!
Jesus states, “And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come”. This age we are living in through this covenant is the ‘age of grace’, when Jesus returns that will end. When we die we enter in eternity, we enter the next age.
When Jesus returns at the ‘Parousia’ the next age will end and ‘Purgatory’ (prison 1 Peter 3:19) will cease forever. St. Paul was very aware of this when he writes, “May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus because he often gave me new heart and was not ashamed of my chains. But when he came to Rome, he promply searched for me and found me. May the Lord grant him mercy from the Lord on that day. And know very well the services he rendered in Ephesus”.
St. Paul’s belief clearly lays the foundation of the promised resurrection and the Lord’s return. With the end of this ‘age’ the Lord’s mercy for those saved who had been ‘asleep’, will be granted and realized. Notice that this is far before Constantine.

Constantine was a Roman Emperor who eventually became the first Catholic Head of State. He became a Christian largely through the influence of his Mother, St. Helenia. As a pagan, he burned some Bishops to the stake in front of their churches. He learned to respect these Catholic leaders for their strength and their faith.
As he opened up to the truth of the Christians, Our Lord granted him a sign he saw in the sky that said, “by this sign you shall conquer”. He saw a cross in the sky and because of this vision, he placed a cross on the shields of his Soldiers before a major battle with a rival, Maxentius, the self-appointed Ceasar who controlled Italy and Africa.
With Constantine’s victory, he secured the Roman Empire. After his conversion to the Catholic Faith, he published his famous ‘Edict of Milan’ that gave Christians freedom and reversed the Roman law that made Christianity illegal going all the way back to Christ. Constantine laid down the foundations for which Europe and the new World would later build upon. The idea of freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of the truth, which is the hope of true happiness.
Unfortunately, some preachers have accused Constantine with forcing people to become Christians. This is completely false as history reveals he was tolerant to the paganism he himself rejected. He gave the Church freedom to openly practice the Faith so the Church came out of the catacombs, the caves, the homes and in honor of the martyrs built cathedrals and churches to honor the heros of the faith.
When Constantine came on the scene, the Pope was St. Sylvester I who was the 32nd successor of St. Peter. The practices of the Catholic Church before Constantine did not change after Constantine in it’s substance but through his conversion, the Church was able to come out into the open.
What our Protestant friends may not realize is that during the first 3 hundred years of the Faith, it was greatly subdued and persecuted, but if you go back into the catacombs, you will see where the people invoked the Saint’s for their intercession. The first 34 Popes were all martyrs all the way up to Constantine. St. Sylvester I was an older man, weary from years of persecution as were the Bishops at the time. They would die before renouncing Christ or allowing false doctrines to enter the Household of God.
Going back to the debate, I answered his issues one after another for a considerable amount of time. The next day the Battalion Chaplain came to me wondering what I had done to the young man. He said I had rocked this guy’s world. I had taken what he had thought was concrete evidence and totally blew him away.
My purpose was to explain the truth to him so he would not go on continuing spreading falsehoods. St. Paul states, “…I may hear news of you, that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind struggling together for the faith of the gospel, not intimidated in any way by your opponents” (Philippians 1:27-28).
St. Peter was the first Pope!

Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Sola Christus, Sola Scriptura, Sola Deo Gloria. These are the so-called ”five solas” that make up the rallying cry of Protestantism’s view of how we are saved.

In a nutshell, Protestants contend that we are saved by Grace alone, through Faith alone, in Christ alone, by the authority of Scripture alone, for His Glory alone.

Now, make no mistake, we are to understand that we are certainly saved by Grace through Faith in Christ, aided by the Scriptures and for His Glory.

but all five of these Protestant doctrines are false….. because God requires our participation in our own salvation and, though it is certainly Christ that is the Author of our salvation, it is the Church that is the means.

God has never acted alone, in the affairs of men, since He created the first man. Does God need man’s participation to carry out His will? Of course not. Was Christ’s sacrifice at Calvary materially sufficient to save all men? Yes, it was.

The issue isn’t what God needs, it is what God wills. We do not have to understand why God has attached Salvation to a Covenant relationship but we do have to understand that He has done so and honor our part of the Covenant.

That is why Grace alone, through Faith alone in Christ alone, by Scripture alone for His Glory alone is Bologna alone….. and not present anywhere in Scripture or Judeo/Christian history.

These five solas were the invention of Martin Luther. They do not appear, expressed or implied, anywhere in the Bible. The only times they are alleged to appear result from verses of scripture that are wrenched from their context and misinterpreted, as we will clearly show.

In the course of exposing these flawed doctrines for what they are, we are going to have expose several protest straw men used frequently to defend them.

The first strawman is the so-called “weak Jesus” argument. This argument holds that the Catholic Jesus is a ”weak Jesus” because He is somehow unable to save us without our assistance. This argument is totally fallacious because it draws a non-existent line between what Christ is able to do according to His omnipotence to what He must do according to His Justice. Christ simply cannot declare an unjust person justified, for to do so acts against His very nature of Justice, which is perfect. Rather than the Catholic Jesus being a “weak Jesus”, the protestant Jesus is not a sovereign Jesus.

The second straw man is that Catholicism is a religion of works while protestantism is a religion of faith. This is a fallacy of the “false dilemma” where two choices are presented as the only two options in order to force someone to accept your position. The truth is that real choice is between protestants who believe that Faith consists of verbal and intellectual assent alone and that works are a presumed result of Salvation as a singular and finished event. Catholics, on the other hand, reject both the propositions of salvation by vain, faithless works as espoused in verses like Ephesians 2:8-9 and of work-less faith as espoused in Romans 2 and James 2 and countless other passages. Catholics uphold the two-fold principle that without God we can do nothing, yet through God we can do anything.

The third straw man is that Catholics reject the inerrantcy and inspiration of Holy Scripture. Again, this is a fallacious argument. Scriptural sufficiency is, in no way a logical consequence of Scriptural infallibility. If I quote Jonah 1;17, I quote a passage that is both infallible and inspired but I challenge anyone to tell me that knowing that Jonah was inside a fish for 3 days is sufficient for salvation. The Bible tells us that the teachings of Jesus couldn’t fit in all the books written since the beginning of time (John 21:25).

The last straw man is that the Catholic church violates 1 Timothy 2:5 by elevating the Pope, the Priests or the Saints to the position of mediators between God and Man. Ministers are not mediators and they certainly are not mediators between God and Man. Only Christ could perform this role because only He IS God and Man.

With these points made, let us enter into our discussion.

To support their position that Salvation is by Grace alone, Protestants often quote Ephesians 2:8

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God — 9 not because of works, lest any man should boast.

These verses do indeed tell us several things about salvation.

  1. That we are saved by grace, which is a free gift, undeserved and unmerited.
  2. That that grace is received as a result of faith.

Many protestants assert that this passage says that Salvation is the free gift of God that this passage describes and that Grace is nothing but an expression for God’s favor.

This interpretation does extreme violence to the passage. The subject of the sentence is Grace. The verses tell us the attributes of Grace- that it is free and undeserved- and the result of Grace- Salvation. So Grace is a thing, not a disposition.

Verse 7 proves this; 2:7 that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

Grace is not God’s kindness but something given to us according to God’s kindness.

JN 1:16 From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace,

JN 1:17 because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

ACTS 6:8 Now Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people.

ACTS 11:23 When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart,

ACTS 13:43 After the congregation had dispersed, many Jews and worshipers who were converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to remain faithful to the grace of God.

ACTS 15:11 On the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they.”

EPH 1:7 In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace

EPH 2:5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

EPH 2:7 that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

EPH 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God;

EPH 3:2 if, as I suppose, you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for your benefit,

EPH 3:7 Of this I became a minister by the gift of God’s grace that was granted me in accord with the exercise of his power.

EPH 3:8 To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches of Christ,

EPH 4:7 But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

EPH 4:29 No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear.

So, Grace is given to us. But why? To find out, you need to go only 1 more verse.
2:10 For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.

By Christ’s Grace we are saved for the purpose of doing the good work that has been prepared for us. This means that that Grace must be responded to by works. Works are the completion of Faith (James 2:22). Therefore, Grace alone is refuted because Grace requires a response and it is that response that confirms our faith. There is still no reason for boasting because the grace that enables us to do good works is not a result of our efforts but of God.

To support their contention that Salvation is by faith alone, protestants cannot support any direct proof texts. In fact, the only text that uses the term Faith Alone is one that explicitly refutes it

James 2: 24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.

There are scores of passages that tie Salvation to works and perseverance. Phillipians 2;12, Matthew 24:13 and Romans 2: 5-10. Matthew chapter 25 explicitly ties works to Salvation. The idea of salvation by only a verbal assent to Faith is absurd and comes from taking certain verses out of context.

One such example is Romans 10:9-13

9 because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved. 11 The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and bestows his riches upon all who call upon him. 13 For, “every one who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”

The biggest mistake one can make (and many do make) is to read this passage out of literary and Biblical context and inject into it that which it does not say. In doing so, one turns the Bible into a mass of contradictions on salvation.

Indeed, conforming to this kind of overly literal translation, this very passage gives 3 different criteria for salvation;

  1. Confessing Jesus’ Lordship with your lips and believing God raised Him from the dead. (verse 9).
  2. Believing in Him (Christ) (verse 11)
  3. Calling on the name of the Lord, only. (verse 13)

One can simply take these words and run with them- and many do- but all that does is create confusion with a multitude of passages about salvation.

Out of such absurdly literal interpretations grows the doctrine of Sola Fide- Salvation by “Faith alone”. Many people confuse “literal” with “true”. The two are not at all synonymous. There are countless scriptures that must be properly interpreted because the literal interpretation would be misleading.

One example of this is a Scripture that has an allegorical meaning;

Revelation 12: 3 And another portent appeared in heaven; behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems upon his heads. 4 His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven, and cast them to the earth.

Another example is a scripture that loses something in the translation because the English words are not quite compatible;

Luke 14: 26 “If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

To take the English translations of these passages, at literal face value, would be ridiculous. So, it is the same with the passage in Romans. How many different versions of salvation can we come up with if we apply this kind of a simplistic, sound byte approach?

There are 3 in the passage above, alone.

  1. Confessing Jesus’ Lordship with your lips and believing God raised Him from the dead. (verse 9).
  2. Believing in Him (Christ) (verse 11)
  3. Calling on the name of the Lord, only. (verse 13)

There are so many more.

  1. We are saved by keeping the Commandments (Matthew 19:17)
  2. We are saved by belief only (John 3:16)
  3. We are saved by belief and Baptism (Mark 16:16)
  4. We are saved by Repentance and Baptism (Acts 2:38)
  5. We are saved by Baptism only (1 Peter 3:21)
  6. We are saved by being born again by water and the Holy Spirit (John 3:5)
  7. We are saved by perseverance (Matthew 24:13)
  8. We are saved by Faith, apart from works (Romans 3:28)
  9. We are saved by Works and not by Faith alone (James 2:24)
  10. We are saved by multiplying faith (Matthew 25:14-30)
  11. We are saved by the Corporal works of Mercy (Matthew 25:31-46)
  12. We are saved by advancing in Righteousness (Matthew 5:20)
  13. We are saved by being poor in spirit, pure in heart,meek, merciful, peacemakers who are persecuted (Matthew 5:3-10)
  14. We are saved by producing good fruit as proof of repentance (Matthew 3:7-10)
  15. We are saved by His blood (Romans 5:9).
  16. We are saved by Grace (Acts 15:11)
  17. We are saved by Grace through Faith (Ephesians 2:8-9)
  18. We are saved by working out our salvation with fear and trembling. (Phillipians 2:12)
  19. We are saved by eating Christ’s Body and drinking His blood (John 6:48-58)
  20. We are saved by the Church (Matthew 16:18-19)
  21. We are only saved by forgiveness through those Christ gave the authority to (John 20:23)
  22. We are saved by humility (Matthew 18:2-4)
  23. We are only saved by obedience to earthly religious authority (Romans 13:1-2)
  24. We are only saved if we don’t judge (Romans 2:1-3)

I have just given you more than 25 different perspectives on how we are saved. Which one is true? Which is the correct one?

It is silly to simply pick one, interpret it how we choose and run with it. If we are to use Scripture as the model for Salvation, we must use the whole body of Scripture and interpret it as it is, not as we wish it to be. The truth is that all of these verses contain elements of what is required for salvation.

This brings us back to Romans 10, and other proof texts like it, where protestants claim Salvation is only an act of Faith or Belief. The issue is not that the verses are not true, they are.
Yet, they are only true in that which they truly say and not in the meanings that are falsely ascribed to the words.

The entire weight of these passages hinges on the meaning of belief. Protestants want to define belief in it’s simplest form- intellectual and verbal assent. In other words, if I assent to a truth in my heart and express that truth with words, then I am saved.

Does the sense of this chapter convey that? no it does not!

The word believe is translated from the greek word pisteusēs which conveys to believe in, to trust in and to lean on. It conveys an active commitment to action. So, it is also true with the word Lord (kurios, meaning authority) and the Word Confess ( omologēsēs, meaning to speak of one mind)

Therefore, what this passage is saying is that you must believe in, lean on and trust Jesus Christ fully, submitting yourself fully to His Lordship and authority and fully accepting and trusting in His resurrection. This is an active, ongoing process.

Notice that it says that if you do this, you will be saved. There is nothing in this passage (or any other, for that matter) that implies Salvation as a singular event.

These passages assure us that those who truly believe in Christ in mind, heart and deed, can have confidence in salvation. Those who believe in vain cannot.

1 John 2: 4 He who says “I know him” but disobeys his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly love for God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are in him:

If Salvation is not by Grace alone nor by Faith alone then, as a consequence, it cannot be by Christ alone, either.

Take the parable of the wedding feast . It illustrates this very clearly.

Matthew 22

1 And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, 2 “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, 3* and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come. 4 Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.’ 5 But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, 6 while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. 7 The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.’ 10* And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.
11 “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; 12* and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13* Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Let’s look at this analogy closely. The King represents the Father, the Bridegroom represents Christ and the Bride represents the Church. The wedding feast represents Christ’s mystical marriage to His Bride. Those who are invited first represent the Jews. Those servants who brought the invitations were the prophets. The Jews killed the prophets so the King destroyed them and their city (Jerusalem). [Matthew 23:37, Revelation 17 & 18).

Then the King invited others (The Gentiles). Many came and dined but some came unprepared. they are represented by the foolish servant who showed up without the wedding garment.

This represents those who are not baptized or sanctified.

Revelation 3: 17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing; not knowing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. 18 Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may be rich, and white garments to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see.

So, you see that Christ offers the invitation but many will refuse the invitation outright. Others will accept the invitation in word but still hold on to their uncleanness.

The result will be the same-

13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”

The attendants represent the Holy Angels and the outer darkness, of course, represents hell.

So, the fact that we must respond to the call (and not just by word but by action as well), refutes the concept of Sola Christus on one level. However, what is meant most by the Protestant claim of Sola Christus (Christ alone) is foundational to another Protestant Sola- Sola Scriptura.

By Christ alone, Protestants assert two things;

  1. That we cannot contribute to our own salvation.
  2. That there is no visible church or ministry or communion of saints that contribute to our salvation.

In asserting that Salvation is through Christ alone, protestants contend that each person is saved individually and personally according to a personal relationship with Christ.

This claim is bound structurally to the doctrine of Sola Scriptura and to the doctrine of Sola Fide. They all must stand together or fall together.

Sola Scriptura is the doctrine that asserts that the only authority we are bound to is Scripture. Further, Protestants contend that we are bound only to the 66 specific books that make up the Protestant canon. Some go even further and maintain that we are bound to a specific translation, namely, The King James version.

The first, and most ironic thing is that there is nothing whatsoever in Scripture that asserts such rubbish but that does not stop Protestants from going to great extents to assert that there is.

Each and every argument presented to defend Sola Scriptura is a non-sequiter that simply does not get them to their destination.

In fact, in their zeal to defend this indefensible doctrine, protestants will invariably misrepresent the Catholic position, whether intentional or not.

Therefore, our starting point must be that on which Protestants and Catholics agree upon regarding scripture.

  1. We both believe Scripture is inspired. That is, we believe Scripture is- in a sense- the Word of God. More accurately, it is a recording of the Word of God.
  2. We both believe that Scripture is free from doctrinal or moral error (infallible). That is, we believe that Scripture itself is free of doctrinal or moral error. This does not always hold true to the interpretation of Scripture. Protestant interpretation of Scripture is free of all kinds of errors!

So, let’s move on to the definition of Sola Scriptura. Not my definition, mind you, but theirs;

The doctrine that the Bible alone1 is the ultimate authority2 was the “Formal Principle” of the Reformation. In 1521 at the historic interrogation of Luther at the Diet of Worms3, he declared his conscience to be captive to the Word of God4 saying, “Unless I am overcome with testimonies from Scripture or with evident reasons — for I believe neither the Pope nor the Councils, since they have often erred and contradicted one another5 — I am overcome by the Scripture texts which I have adduced, and my conscience is bound by God’s Word.” Similarly, the Belgic Confession stated, “We believe that [the] holy Scriptures fully6 contain the will of God, and that whatsoever man ought to believe unto salvation is sufficiently7 taught therein…Neither may we consider any8 writings of men, however holy these men may have been, of equal value with those divine Scriptures nor ought we to consider custom or the great multitude, or antiquity, or succession of times and persons, or councils, decrees or statutes, as of equal value with the truth of God… Therefore, we reject with all our hearts whatsoever does not agree with this infallible9 rule” (VII).

There is more than enough there to declare Sola Scriptura as heretical and even blasphemous but, unfortunately, protestants go even further.

The very words of the Westminster confession assert:

VII. All things in Scripture are not alike plain in themselves, nor alike clear unto all: yet those things which are necessary to be known, believed, and observed for salvation are so clearly propounded, and opened in some place of Scripture or other, that not only the learned, but the unlearned, in a due use of the ordinary means, may attain unto a sufficient understanding of them.10

Let’s look at these points closer.

  1. The principle of the Bible alone is expressly refuted by Scripture in so many places it is difficult to count. In Matthew 16:18-20, we are told that the Church has the authority to bind and loose. this is a legal term denoting authority. In Luke 10:16 we are told that He who rejects the words of the Disciple (and by consequence, his successors) rejects Christ and The father. In Matthew 18:15-17, we are told that the Church is the final arbitor of disputes. In 1 Timothy 3:15 we see that the Church is the Pillar and foundation of all truth. In 2 Thessalonians 2:15 were are told to obey all teachings of the Church, written and Oral. In Romans 13:1-2 we are told that rejection of ordained authority- yes it uses the term “ordained”- brings Judgment on us. In Matthew 23:2, we are told that the authority rests in the Chair of Moses and, that it is not dissolved but given to others. (Matthew 21:42-44). The authority of the Church is clear as crystal.
  2. The notion of the Bible as an ultimate authority is absurd and untenable. The Bible is a book! It is a collection of inspired and infallible documents written by men. Each and every book of the Bible is written by men who were authorized and ordained to write, but also to preach. The Bible draws it’s authority from men. Men wrote it, translated it, canonized it, interpreted it, printed it, bound it and sold it. The Bible didn’t fall from the sky. Without the Old and new Testament Churches, the Bible could never have come to be. The authority rests in the Church. Without the action of men, the Bible will sit on your nightstand and collect dust. It cannot read itself, interpret itself, preach itself . The Scriptures contain the word “Bible” 0 times but the word “Church” more than 100 times. The Bible is not an authority and never claims to be, nor ever can be. The Bible is not divine, nor can it last forever. It is paper and ink. Should we cherish Scripture? Of course! but the idea of Scripture alone is nonsense and, ironically, un-Biblical.
  3. I cannot help but appreciate the fact that Luther defended his heresy at a place called the diet of worms, since that is what he now is.
    Mark 9: 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.
  4. The Word of God canard is one of the most circular arguments that protestants use. It goes like this- because the Bible tells us that Scripture is the inspired Word of God, anything that isn’t scripture isn’t the Word of God. They justify this insidious nonsense by quoting Scripture telling us not to add to the Word of God. This is a circular argument. Only Scripture is the Word of God because Scripture, which is the only Word of God, tells us not to add to the only Word of God, which is Scripture. How anyone could fail to see this argument as fallacious is beyond me. However, the argument is not on fallacious, it is false.

    Romans 10:8 But what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); ……..
    …………14 But how are men to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher? 15* And how can men preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news!”
    2 Thessalonians 2: 15 So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.

This is not only the fallacy of the unestablished premise (for Luther has only his own word that the church has erred or contradicted itself), but it contradicts the plain promises of Christ that what the Church bound on earth would be bound in heaven (Matthew 16:18-20), that whoever rejected what the Church said rejected Him (Luke 10:16), that He would be with the Church always (Matthew 28:20) and that the Holy spirit would lead it to all truth (John 16:13). All these promises are recorded in Scripture. Luther cannot plausibly infer that all of these scriptures have been broken and still credibly appeal to Scripture. All Christianity stands or falls on these promises.

  8. Since the Scriptures, themselves, are writings of men, this argument is self contradictory.
  9. Since Luther is claiming his own doctrine as Infallible, he has to prove that he speaks with God’s infallible authority. Further, by his own logic, he must do so Structurally.
  10. Practical sufficiency is dis-proven practically, in the fact that 33,000 Christian denominations cannot agree on what Scripture teaches Re; Salvation.

This brings us, lastly, to Sola Deo Gloria. To say that Salvation is for God’s Glory alone makes God look like an egomaniac. God’s Great Glory is exemplified in His Power and Might and Justice but, most of all, in His Great Love and Mercy.

I close with Paul’s words to the Romans;

Romans 2:3 Do you suppose, O man, that when you judge those who do such things and yet do them yourself, you will escape the judgment of God? 4* Or do you presume upon the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not know that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5 But by your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. 6* For he will render to every man according to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8 but for those who are factious and do not obey the truth, but obey wickedness, there will be wrath and fury. 9 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11* For God shows no partiality.
